Aphasia Foundations: 5 Topics to Understand Aphasia

As nice as it would be, aphasia doesn’t come with an instruction manual.
Maybe you got a rushed explanation in a hospital hallway. Or maybe you’ve been living with aphasia for years and you’re still turning over questions nobody’s answered:
Why does this happen?
Will it get better?
Why do I feel like a different person?
You might feel behind, but we promise you you’re not. These aren’t things everyone else already knows.
The truth is, foundational information about aphasia is often rushed, scattered, or skipped completely, and that leaves room for a lot of gaps (and frustration) — even years after diagnosis.
That’s exactly why we built Aphasia Foundations: a free, five-part course inside our Join In Aphasia community. It was created by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) specifically for people with aphasia and their care partners. Aphasia Foundations brings the basics together in one place — at your pace — so you’re not left piecing things together on your own.
Here’s what the five modules cover, and how the course can support you wherever you are in your aphasia journey.
1. Understanding the brain
Aphasia starts with the brain, so that’s where this course starts, too.
This module walks through:
- the basics of brain anatomy
- how strokes, brain injuries, and other conditions can affect communication
- simple ways to keep your brain healthy and active going forward
You’ll get clear explanations of what’s actually happening in your brain — no medical background required.
2. Aphasia basics
This is where the course dives into understanding aphasia itself: what causes it, the different types, and related conditions like apraxia and dysarthria that often show up alongside it.
It also covers something just as important as the science: reminders that you are still intelligent, still capable, and still you. Aphasia changes how you communicate. It doesn’t change who you are deep down.
3. Building your communication toolbox
If speaking is difficult, this module helps you build out other ways to get your message across: from low-tech tools like communication boards to high-tech options like communication devices (also called “AAC” or “augmentative and alternative communication” devices).
The idea is simple: the best way to communicate is whatever way actually works for you, whether that’s one tool or several used together.
4. Mental health & identity after aphasia
Aphasia affects more than communication. It can affect how you see yourself, how connected you feel to others, and how you’re doing emotionally day to day.
This module speaks honestly about that. We discuss grief, identity, and the very real mental health impact aphasia can have, while also offering real coping strategies and reminders that recovery isn’t a straight line. It’s a topic that deserves real space — and this module gives it that.
5. Relationships & community
Aphasia can change friendships, family dynamics, and romantic relationships, largely because communication is such a big part of connection.
This module offers practical ways to maintain relationships that matter, rebuild ones that have grown distant, and create new connections along the way.
You’ll also learn about tools like Supported Conversation for Adults with Aphasia (SCA™), which helps the people around you become better communication partners too.
Learn at your own pace
There’s no clock running on Aphasia Foundations. Complete one module a day, one a month, or come back to a topic a year from now when a new question comes up.
The course stays available to revisit whenever living with aphasia brings you back to something you want to understand a little more deeply.
Part of something bigger: Join In Aphasia
Aphasia Foundations lives inside Join In Aphasia, our free community built for connection, learning, and support.
The course gives you a foundation. The community gives you people, ongoing conversations, live sessions, and a space where you’re never figuring aphasia out alone.
Think of Foundations as your way in: the more of the course you complete, the more connected to the Join In Aphasia community you’ll become.
Together, they’re built to support real aphasia education and aphasia support for as long as you need it.
A certificate and an invitation
When someone with aphasia completes all five modules of Aphasia Foundations, they’ll receive a certificate of completion and an invitation to join the Join In Aphasia VIP Club.
The VIP Club includes:
- A dedicated group for fellow course graduates
- Opportunities to share feedback that shapes future offerings
- Early access to new tools and resources
- Ongoing involvement in aphasia education and advocacy
Care partners are welcome to take the course, too. However, VIP Club membership is reserved for people with aphasia.
Start where you are
Whether you were diagnosed last week or you’ve been living with aphasia for a decade, Aphasia Foundations was built to meet you where you are. Join In Aphasia is free, and Aphasia Foundations is waiting for you inside it.
